I rather suspect the "incestuous feelings" hypothesized by John to be reading far too much
into the characters from outside. I have always assumed based on hints in the storyline that Dick and
Dorothea's parents were both academics (viz both of them being away on an archaeological dig during
"Winter Holiday") and that Dick and Dorothea reflect the "team" nature of their parents' relationship. In
any case it is not unusual for children to have fairly determined plans based on how they currently perceive
the world and themselves, which mutate as they grow older -- or at least unexamined postures.

In Swallowdale when Mrs. Walker (speaking of the GA) says
"..in thirty years' time ,when I come to stay with you..."
"We'll never let you go away," said Susan.
"There won't be any coming about it," said John, "because there won't be any going. You're fixed."
