Good point Dan, you poor souls who never visit the Lake District!

We go every year for the last week in July. We stay in Skelwith Bridge, activities are weather-dependent of course, but we always go to Ambleside Sports to see the C&W wrestling, fell races, hound trails etc. This year the weather was amazingly hot and dry. Too hot for much high-level stuff, we discovered the Walkers' Special cruise on Windermere, we caught the boat from Waterhead across to Wray Castle, walked down the western shore of the lake and caught the passenger ferry back across to Bowness, and on back to Waterhead. We were the only people in Bowness wearing walking boots, everyone else had flip-flops on. Felt a bit like the Swallows in their muddy wellies in Walton-on-the-Naze!

It was astonishing how quiet and unspoiled the western shore of Windermere was, considering the eastern shore is so built-up and busy. Definitely an excursion we'll be repeating next year.
