Plenty of current revenue expenditure - not really a shortage of money.
And Captain Flint's lifestyle - commuting backwards and forwards from South America to go on holiday several times a year - can hardly have been cheap.
I can't believe that his mining activities - which he could drop for months on end - were profitable enough to permit this. They cannot really have been much more than a hobby.
