challenging the assumption that Bob Blackett had been an officer in WW1

What else can one do but challenge such an assumption? I cannot think of a single scrap of evidence for this. To say that he 'probably was an officer' won't do. All the 'officer class' theorising just collapses. Perhaps Bob Blackett was a deserter and was imprisoned, then caught a bug in prison and died? Conscientious objector? Where do you stop? (If there is any clue in the books about BB's 'army career', I'd be eager to hear of it, and will back down appropriately, but I can't remember ever seeing any such mention.)

BTW again - thanks for your comments Andy, but in fairness I should say that the 'Nancy as an energy force' theory is not new. I haven't looked it up, but I think something like that is mentioned in Peter Hunt's Approaching Arthur Ransome, and perhaps also in Christina Hardyment's book. Is it Prue who said recently that she was writing a paper on Nancy? Perhaps she has also come to the same conclusion? Or something totally new?
