Captain Flint can't have been all that well-off. He was only able to pay for the repairs to 'Swallow' because he'd "had another dollop of pocket-money from my publishers".

That is what he said. But John was proud to excess and would surely have hated to be the recipient of anything that might be construed as charity, Captain Flint was tactfully indicating that the money was available because of the Swallows' actions in finding the book.

'Mixed Moss' was clearly successful and profitable, but Captain Flint's lifestyle dated from well before its publication. One of the labels on his trunk showed that he travelled First Cabin class on the P & O.
