The Jock 'placeholder' hypothesis goes something like this.
AR starts with a real place or person and works up his fictional
characters onto an existing framework changing or obscuring
some of the real life details.

This hypothesis fits in well with the Swallows and how they
relate to the real life Altounyans.

In the case of the Amazons, if you also subscribe to the Hobbsian
Heresy, you have the Crossley girls being the placeholders for Nancy
and Peggy and Kenneth Crosssley being the placeholder for
Captain Flint. Now I'm not sure that Mr Crossley would have
welcomed the intrusion that would have followed public revelation
of his daughters' and his own role in the gestation of SA, so as
well as the usual changing of the details (including, perhaps, taking
Nancy and Peggy down a notch in the social scale) AR only gives us
an impressionist view of the Beckfoot economy. But enough
details of the originals survive in the frameworks, e.g. Captain Flint's
worldwide wanderings, for it to be possible for a persistant researcher
to track down the original 'placeholders'.
