Prue, I think there were many middle class officers in WW1. I can cite my own family as an example - in no way upper class. All the close male relatives except my father (who was too young) died in the slaughter.
I think the average life expectancy was 3 weeks for a subaltern on the front.
If one was taking sides, it was the upper class generals who failed to realise what a bloody stalemate the war in France was.
