Brilliant info, Robert - thanks very much. By the way, it may or may not be relevant that AR travelled to China in 1926 aboard a P&O ship - the Kashgar, and almost certainly went first-class. First-class wasn't that much of a big deal on a 'K' class vessel. He returned overland - Trans-Siberian Rly. All this and more can be found in Ransome in China 1927 - a fascinating book.
