I think that the further back you go the more obvious and the more
important the class barriers. The plot of L.P. Hartley's "The Go
Between" only makes sense in a very class conscious England, but
that story does take place before WW I.

I don't think that to use the word "class" you must subscribe to
a Marxist analysis of society. The implication that this is
necessarily so is perhaps what makes Peter so cross about the use
of the word.
