The rectangular card, as shown in the book, showing the information that was kept by the Beckfoot telephone, is not really the question, as Ransome described it in his text with illustration.

My concern is with the origins of the circular design that is theoretically to be the card by the Beckfoot telephone which has those references to DIAL operations.

It is my belief that the circular design, with DIAL instructions, reflects a later time of telephone technology after that of the Fire in the Fells described in PP, and that design is not from Ransome origins.
