My impression was that the authorities, PC Tedder, Mr Farland and other interested parties, boat owners etc. etc. gave more credibility to George Owddon's story, possibly because, as I think Jock is arguing, he was of a higher social class than the D&Gs. The credibility gap is exposed when characters like Dr Dudgeon who you might think would be sympathetic, challenge the D&Gs supporters, even his own son.
