Absolutely right gentlemen - I believe the class distinction was at the beginning of WW1 but with the huge losses it was inevitable that men regardless of class were promoted in the later years.
K.M. Peyton in her Flambard's trilogy about WW1 deals with the division in the Air Force in 1914, and I believe there was a TV series set in the same era some years ago where a young farmer entered the Air Force as a pilot but was not automatically made an officer because of his class. Eventually his ability won out.
