TV series set in the same era some years ago where a young farmer entered the Air Force as a pilot but was not automatically made an officer because of his class. Eventually his ability won out.

But the hero - Alan? - only got promoted, indeed only survived a Court Martial, because his Captain spoke out forcefully for him at the critical moments when his class was dragging him down in the eyes of other officers.
On this general line, there seem to be very few men in their thirties in the Lake novels. No Bob, no young Jacksons, Dixons, Swainsons. Did a disastrous action destroy the local regiment?
