Well I have thought that “gentry” was the right term for the Turners. Re having money:

Pro: CF’s world travel as a passenger cf the trunks (though he twice (SA & ML?) said he had been a cabin boy); the renovation of the house in PP; having a car & launch (& phone, the Tysons haven't one).

Con: Only one servant, Cook (& a girl , in SD I think who is glad to see the GA go); mention (PM) that the Beckfoot lawn is no longer used for croquet.

Virginia Nicholson remarks in “Among the Bohemians: Experiments in Living 1900-1939” that it was not until the Second World War that even people on moderate incomes found it hard to afford the minimum of a maid and a charwoman. Several references to AR in the book, as well as Bloomsbury.
