I am not doubting that it would have made a difference, I think that the cities were more hard hit, but migration from the country to the city would have evened things up. I also think the cohort would have been bigger than 20-30 because we read of very young and older men volunteering.

Interestingly enough in Ransome's books, we don't see that many single women and quite a few single men. I would have thought all the eligible men would have had no problems finding wives with the general shortageof men and excess of women. Just a reminder that they are fiction not fact.
