Somewhere in the threads below, several books were mentioned as how BOYS could have fun with stuff they make, or just by using ordinary items found round the house. Two books were mentioned:

"The Dangerous Book For Boys" - Iggulden
"The American Boy's Handy Book" - Beard

As an avid Boy Scout in my youth,I was very interested in what these had to offer. The latter book is a bit out of date, referring to what I would call a "slide projector" as a "Magic Lantern" whose light source is a candle. Boy! That goes back at least a 100 years or so. But there is a lot of fun-type stuff in them to be of interest to the usual Boy that is not otherwise staring at some dumb video game which seems to be today's preoccupation.

However, in quickly browsing these two books, I came across an oddity. In the "Dangerous..." p 178 there is the layout of the compass rose very similar to the "Points of a compass" illustration on p141 of WD (Godine) however the "Dangerous..." version has TWO locations marked as NW by W, where one should have been NW by N. A trivial error perhaps.

But for those interested in a Ransome-like adventure, a boy could do well to have gone through these books and pick up on the fascinating collection of info every young fellow should know.

It has been a while since I was a "boy" since I am now 71 years into this Grand Adventure, but it has been delightful to go through these ideas presented here. It makes me feel that maybe I am not yet too old to appreciate what is being taught here.

Don't remember who on the TarBoard made mention of these books, but my thanks to whomever for bringing them to my attention. AMAZON.COM had both - now I have both.

The things we learn while persuing All Things Ransome.
