Why Arctic and not Antarctic ?

Pam's recent post where she mentioned 'seals' as in WH, prompted me to ask: Why, in WH, was Nansen and the Fram the model, and not Scott and his antarctic exploits ? (making the Rio people 'penguins', perhaps?)
Was it because there were some nay-sayers surrounding Scott's writings, or was it just that the Arctic was much closer, and hence it had to be an arctic explorer ?
