Throughout the books there is a constant reference to Literature, beginning with the epic about Cortez and Darien, and continuing throughout the series. In many cases, the works referred to are ones which the main characters could/would have been exposed to at school during classes. Although Scott was idolised in Britain as a shining example of courage, he unfortunately didn't get to write a book about his adventure. Nansen wrote a very entertaining book, which I am betting could have been found on his study bookshelves. In it, Nansen described the driving of sledges by sails, which AR incorporated in his WH story. Scott's expedition relied [if I remember correctly] on Welsh pit ponies, which were unsuccessful. These were hardly the sort of things that young people could incorporate into their adventure, whereas a simple square sail could be managed.
