If it was an old mine working, there should be a spoil heap outside. Athough with a small working, the spoil may have been washed or eroded away.
The text does indicate that it might be a mine working as the is a question about trying to date mining activity in the area. A fascinating find anyway.
In the past people have assumed that Swallowdale with it's top and bottom waterfalls are a continuous area.
With AR's propensity to cut and paste various pieces of lakeland, I can see no logical reason why the lower waterfall should be close to Swallowdale. The upper waterfall does appear in the Swallowdale picture of the camp.
