Well spotted, Ed! I've just checked the DBFB and the compass is wrong! Another huge oversight is that the S&A series is not mentioned in the list of books that boys must read.
I imagine John would have known practically everything that's in the DBFB. Maybe he would have struggled with some of the Latin though!
