I'm not Jon but... Clan chiefs have names that can point to a geographical area. To take a well known example, John McLeod is head of clan McLeod, and is 'The McLeod of McLeod'. His home in the Islands is Dunvegan castle, and in the '30s if he had been personally involved it would have pointed firmly at the Isle of Skye. In GN, the idea was to avoid revealing where the divers nested. Hence 'The McGinty'.
