This was the traditional British heating system for many years. In the Lakes with a predominantly soft water system there would have been few problems with the system scaling up.
It would have a coal or coke fired boiler or even been fed from an Aga type cooking range.
It was a simple and reliable heating system that did not rely on electricity to provide power for a pressurised pump.
I still have this type of system in another house and it works well. Because I live in a very hard water area, it has to be an indirect rather than a direct system. It now has a gas fired boiler rather than the original coke fired system.
