I think that a fairly good case for an initial reading in the order written could probably be made straight through the series. SW has to follow WDMTGTS, since it explains what happened to Jim, and where they ended up, and . . . SA really needs to be first as it puts in so much background that crops up in the other books (Polly & Gibber, Mixed Moss, "Better drowned than duffers . . ." and night sailing, Commander Walker, etc. GN, as a non-Peter Duck, needs to occur after John and Nancy, at least, have demonstrated ability to handle larger boats and the others have to be big enough to handle the necessary halyards, sheets, etc. of Sea Bear. The only exception to the "as written" idea would be PD and SD, which could be read in the order they were written, or in which they occurred.
