The plumber used to bang the split or hole closed them used a liberal amount of lead to solder it closed.
Using a large blowtorch which he had to pump to get a strong flame.

The best ones of those were made by Primus, a Swedish company. The same make (and principle) as the cookers in CF's houseboat. After the initial pumping, they'd burn really hot for a long time, the pressure maintained by the fuel running through the flame itself, in a pipe just above the jet.

I've still got one of those blow torches, although I've not used it for a long time.
