Answer to both questions: The water runs through a pipe or rather a maze of pipe within copper sheathing while the flame plays upon it. The flame is adjustable. They only use gas and water when you use it. Of course, if you use it a lot, it costs more; but then, your traditional hot water heater is continually cycling on and off during the day and night when you are not using it. They make them in various sizes for various use levels. I purchased my first one from "Real Goods" in California and the one I have now from "Home Depot" - it was a special order.

I think "Real Goods" has some efficiency figures for these heaters.

They are rather pricey, but I figure I am saving the difference in less use of gas - which is predicted to be much more expensive this year. And the name of the game now is "Conservation"! I know of one more here in Lucas, Kansas - the local plumber, who is over 80, came over to see how I had installed mine.

I understand the Europeans have had this type of water heater for years. I ran into one in the '50s in San Antonio, Texas - was then a real antique, but sold me on the idea.

It is very interesting how we now are trying to sell the idea of "recycling" and "conservation" when during WWll we did it for the Defense Effort and it is now falling on pretty much deaf ears.

Mr. Ransome was a real pioneer, or was he simply reflecting the realities of the period where if you wasted something you simply did without?
