Beckfoot water supply

If you are close to even a small stream, the force of the water itself can be used to operate a pump, which can then pump water up to your (unpressurized) water cistern. I have seen this used, eg on a Welsh farm. (Needs frequent 're-booting')
I suppose we need some research on mains water supply in the 30's around (e.g. Windermere), unless someone has already done this. (I'm sure there was such a supply in the towns like Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston ..)
