When I was little I was terrified of Nancy. She seemed a threat to the well organised world of the Swallows.

There are lots of Nancys, and that is how they behave. I posted earlier about my sister in law who is a perfect Nancy. The 'leadership role' isn't a burden to them; they could no more abandon it than stop breathing. And they are not a threat to organisation; it may not look like it, but they are its main support. Indomitable women who strode across the sands and bent them to the Empire's yoke... Gertrude Bell, anyone?

I think that, both as a plot driver and as a portrait of that kind of person, AR got Nancy spot on.
