While I agree that Nancy might have been showing off on this occasion, it is the case that the ends of the halyards on dinghies like these were often fitted with sister-hooks with which to grab the traveller. Were such hooks used on Scarab (I can't recall, if indeed we were ever told,) then they should certainly have been moused. So Nancy might simply have been reminding the D's of something that, as newbies to sailing in general and that vessel in particular, they might otherwise have well forgotten.
