I suspect it was a bit of fun for AR to combine Nancy's breathless bossiness with a slightly tongue in cheek piece of geeky NC.
It was probably more in Dick's character (and AR's?) to know and use 'correct' if obscure terminology. Elsewhere CF and the Amazons come across as taking a more relaxed (but effortlessly competent) attitude to boats and boatiness than the earnest John always looking over his shoulder for his father's approval.
Which takes us back to absent parents and AR's alleged emotional distance. A while back, Kathy quoted Geoffrey Trease as saying: 'The first thing in a story for children is somehow to get rid of all the Mums, for when you are just about to climb down the cliff after the pirates, Mum would say: No, no, it's too dangerous!'
In AR’s case, however, the first thing is to get rid of the fathers. And it is not difficult to see why. Where would be the adventure if EW, CF or BB had been there directing things? It is significant that the CF takes a bigger role in the Peter Duck stories with real guns etc.
Another reason could come from AR’s on childhood the death of his father and the impression one gets that AR believed his father thought him a disappointment. This is where the ‘emotional distance’ comes into AR’s life, compounded in the next generation by his difficult relationship with his own daughter.
Yes, AR may have gone to Russia to escape Ivy thus putting a topographical distance between them but I don’t see any evidence of emotional distance between him and Evgenia ‘the whistle blowing mate’ of the Racundra, quite the reverse I would say
