I think a Hydraulic Ram or Water Ram which uses the head of water to pump a proportion of the water to a higher level has been mentioned before, but here is an article on them.

While “Rio” may have had reticulated water & sewerage I would have thought Beckfoot was too far out of town for either (long discussion on toilet facilities at Beckfoot follows!).

Taqui Altounyan described Lanehead in Chapter 14 of "In Aleppo Once", and from memory she said that the kitchen relied on a hand pump, presumably from a well. If so, would water have to be carried upstairs to the bedrooms and bathroom?
