There is a subtext to some of these cases of disbelief which is something to do with ambivalence about the power of imagination needed to be explorers pirates etc. Sometimes, it is suggested, enthusiasm or imagination can run away with Titty, Roger etc so that what they say shouldn't be taken literally "not really".
