My vote for the most life threatening situation goes to the night sailing episode in Swallows & Amazons. Why?
For starters, they are at their youngest and potentially least experienced stage of the books unlike WDMTGTS, it's night time which always increases risk because of the lack of sight (imagine if Titty, Roger and Bridget had been stuck in the Red Sea at night?)and although they generally know where they are and have the compass to guide their direction, they don't know the lake well enough to know where each hidden rock and islet is. Unlike Swallowdale, they are not near the lake edge or if they are they don't know it so if they capsize its unlikely they could find the shore. The potential for disaster is immense.
