In a huff

I've just discovered Woll's AGM slide-show of the Outer Hebrides isle of Lewis where AR set "Great Northern?", and was fascinated reading it. Well done. Of course one knows that his other books were based on real places, etc, but this is the first time I've seen something on "GN?" (Anyone setting off in search of Missee Lee?).
Anyhow, it all reminded me of my time in the UK in 1987-9, and my own AR searches then which took me to Coniston/Windermere, the Broads, and Hampton Water.
You people who live in the UK and can just take off to these various AR spots as Woll did are very fortunate and I hope you realise how lucky you are. It's not so easy in South Africa, where I live near Durban - or nearer to Pietermaritzburg, for those who are familiar . . .
My UK time included a couple of spells - six months over January-September in 1988, three weeks (hay-timing!) in June/July 1989 - working for Lucy Batty and her son Kenneth (are they still there?) at Bank Ground Farm, but great auks and guillemots! that was ten years ago and funds have not allowed me to return since.
AR spots in South Africa are few and far between. Methinks I'll just do the next best thing and slink off to visit a Boer War battlefield instead . . . Anyone coming?
