AFAICR, there was no stipulation about no night sailing when the Swallows set out. It was just "don't do anything dufferish".
John did concede, when he was talking with Mother, that night sailing was rather dufferish, but by then it had happened. Given John's psyche, his Mother's criticism was probably more than enough "punishment".
Might not have been enough for Nancy, though she and Peggy were desperate to get back in bed before the Beckfoot household stirred...
