Ed's comments make me wonder why AR, who knew perfectly well how dangerous sailing on the lakes could be (pace his misadventures with "Jamrach"), had Roger unable to swim at the start of S&A. Yes, it provided a useful sub-plot, but I don't think the book would have suffered greatly if Roger had been able to swim like a fish right from the start. When looked at from the viewpoint Ed describes, the Walker parents were being rather more than duffers.
