If I can attempt an answer to Pam (although I am probably not the best person to do so):- 'Dancing round handbags' refers to the practice of girls dancing with each other at discos, their pink and glittery handbags placed between them on the floor where they can be watched over. It must be a 'UK thing' - it is undoubtedly done in Macclesfield and I do believe it has been observed in Chapel-en-le-Frith, where, so I understand, they do little else . . .
