On the other hand, life was more basic in those days, and parents allowed their children a lot more latitude to make their own decisions about activities. IMHO we are too careful these days, and are in danger of producing a generation of "fraidy cats" by too much control. This applies to the whole community, and has resulted in the "nanny state" where anything vaguely dangerous is proscribed.
