Dick is kind of a quiet leader- he doesn't say much, but he does things- saves the sheep, creates a sailing sledge, finds his way out, etc, etc.
It did seem in WH that Dick, as a non-sailor, was able to accept and work with the limitations of the sailing sledge in a way that the Swallows and Peggy had a hard time accepting. (But we want to tack!)
