Whether to lock the gearbox under sail depends on the type of gearbox. For my particular Hurth gearbox the manufacturer suggests to leave free running in neutral or to lock astern but never lock ahead. I think the general consensus of opinion is that locking the propeller acts less than a brake than if left free spinning - think of sycamore seeds in the autumn and the slow descent that is achieved from this particular spinning propeller.
