Thanks for these references John. I suspect that this will cover most smoking references unless Ed would be kind enough to do a pipes/tobacco/cigars/cigarettes type scan on his database.
As a former pipe smoker, there was a general view that cigarette smokers were lesser mortals (NB cigar smokers were OK). So his reference to George and Ralph smoking cigarettes was probably to indicate that they were "beyond the pale".
I suspect that if one analysed AR books, pipe/cigar smokers were "goodies" and cigarette smokers were "baddies". Doubtless someone can quote a contrary example, but I cannot think of one at the moment.
PS (nit-picking) it was Jim Brading not Brady who owned the Goblin.
