I have to confess that when a teenager I sailed dinghies in the dark quite often, I still do so on occasion, I have steamed my launch in the dark on Windermere, and haven't felt myself unduly at risk, even with hindsight. Almost always there is enough light to see what you are doing and to see any immediate hazards.

Quite obviously only in reasonable weather, but from the description in SA the weather was reasonable, and Swallow was reefed.
