I didn't see that as a girl/boy thing. More like the overwhelming urge someone feels when seeing another making a complete mess of something one can do effortlessly. Susan, seeing the Mastodon murdering the ham, was completely unable to stop herself from intervening.

True. She didn't offer because the Mastodon was a boy, she offered because he was making such a poor job of it. But the reason that Susan is so accomplished at ham-carving is because she's a girl.
