When the D's first meet the S&A's in WH, Peggy says of Dorothea "She wears pigtails". This is apparently a bad thing - why?

And anyway, every picture of Dorothea in WH clearly shows her with plaits, not pigtails.

All the pictures of Susan, Titty, Nancy & Peggy show them with straight chin-length bobs. Short enough to not have to tie back and keep out of the way - very sensible! Is this a superior hairstyle to anything longer?
