I suspect Jenny that in the Young Chieftain’s case Gaelic was the language of the home. He would have been taught English either at home, if they were well educated, or at school.
I find nowadays that many people regret being forced to learn Gaelic, Welsh and Erse. They regard it as a total waste of time. It is different if it is the language of the home. I always respond that we in England were forced to learn Latin.
Remember the old schoolboy rhyme: -

Latin is a language
As dead as dead can be
First it killed the Romans
And now it's killing me!!!

I am glad that I avoided having to learn Welsh as well.
It seems that the only people who are keen on the retention of these marginal languages are those who profit by teaching and promoting them.
I also empathise with Titty and her problems with French verbs.
