One can imagine the difficulties in dealing with long hair while camping- especially in a day when wet hair was considered dangerous. Perhaps Dot should have learned 'French braiding' which lasts for some time. (Or perhaps cornrows?)

At one time, I had long hair. Since I worked in the restaurant industry, I wore it in a long single braid, which also served to anchor my cap. I don't remember ever calling it a pigtail, but then I was an adult when I left the realm of the bobbed hair. (We called it a 'pixie-cut.')

I do think that names- pigtails, braids, locks, ponytails, ponies, are both regional and gernerationally-based. I hear the word 'pony' from kids.
