Cornrowing was popularised here in the UK by Bo Derek in the film '10' - which I think came out in the late 70's.

I concede that AR's usage of 'pigtails' was valid, given that there are obviously vast regional differences in how the term was/is applied. Cleverly, he's making the point that Dorothea had an old-fashioned hairstyle, but the S&A's didn't judge by appearances.

Long wet hair would certainly have been a risk in "catching your death" in those days. Although all the S&A girls swim, I don't think Dorothea ever does.
