The Goblin's running gear is the combination of halyards, tackles, blocks and sheets which together control her sailplan.

Here, we are talking about her infernal combustion auxiliary engine, which we are told is a (Thorneycroft) Handy Billy.

It was routine to turn the petrol off at the tank and run the carburetter bowl and line dry (to avoid "glazing" with evaporated old petrol) and then to freewheel the propeller. The Stuart Turner with which the Goblin might have been equipped came with an optional "sailing clutch" which automatically allowed the propeller to freewheel.
