The evidence for believing him dead is elsewhere in SD; the Amazons overhear Capt. Flint & Mrs. Blackett walking on the lawn. CF says re. the GA's disapproval of the Amazons (words to the effect of - I don't have the book right here) "Bob would have liked them the way they are". If they'd been divorced, that would hardly be offered as consolation or expiation to Mrs. Blackett.
