Enticing though it is to think of a budding romance between Peggy and Mr Jemerling or even one of his crew, I think that AR probably meant that plus fours are not suitable for wearing at sea. A bit harsh as Mr Jemerling could have been planning to land and to wander across a moor in pursuit of the egg of a rare bird and to keep changing clothes is a bit inconvenient.
