Why have snowshoes when you can have skis? Old fashioned pre-carving skis can be bought cheaply. Remove any bindings (I doubt step-in downhill ski bindings will be needed on the mud) replace with old sea-boots or similar screwed through the toes (of the boot not the wearer Roger!. Mud-touring, telemarking mud-jumping the possibilities are endless.
